ESTRAL ART
A collection of Artworks by Rebecca Salter
How do we most often feel?
We often think about a loved one or a place or time and find this invokes feelings – welcome and sometimes unwelcome. Memories invoke a complex mixture of thoughts and emotions which often inhibit or pollute via their very familiarity, the engagement we need most in order to heal.
ABOUT
My art uses a method called Abstract Expressionism.
The viewer is taken into the realm of the abstract and is therefore able to experience emotions and feelings without being locked into reality. It is a direct emotional communication with the artwork, the artist, oneself, the world.
Allowing ourselves to experience directly - without reference to objective reality - is a means to transcend the everyday and live a purer moment. It is a form of meditation, in that we may experience without prejudice the flow of reality in and around us, for itself only, and not for a signified person or thing. For a moment we may know ourselves better, letting go of the world in order to simply be, to experience the clarity of simply experiencing for its own sake.
The creative process itself is similar, indeed begins this flow, engaging with the emotion or subject at hand, in mind, allowing a wash of layers, textures to form on the canvas, which are cleansed or sacrificed, their scars enlivening and refining the work, activating deeper levels of meaning transmitted through the damage, transforming it, then harmonised into the whole again, forming a new balance, finally transcending and calming the surge of creation.
This is itself akin to the process of therapy, as we arrive via trauma and must ourselves add the layers of rehabilitation, acceptance and rebalance, in order that we may find harmony and a new beauty, for the damage can also become a beauty within ourselves, finally achieving a synthesis of healing.
